BEER RUN: Best beer distributor in New Haven? | June 16, 2010

Okay, this one is important. Way more important than where to get a stinkin’ pizza.

Where do I go around here to stock up on beer?

When I first moved here, I had to satisfy my curiosity and buy my beer from the grocery store. Because we couldn’t do that in Pa. And yes, I’m that easily amused.

I’ve had a couple good brews on tap around here of course, namely downtown at Bar and Prime 16. But now it’s time to stockpile. What’s good? Tell me.

Obviously, I have SEEN beer distributors around. They aren’t in shortage. But rather than stopping in each random one or picking Google’s mind on the topic – I want you to show me the pulse.

Now, there are two things that can make a beer distributor a GOOD beer distributor.

1. variety. a wide selection from off the beaten path. or basically, a distributor run by people who like beer.

2. deals. places with good deals on good selections.

  1. not sure about a distributor, but if you are looking for variety check out Amity Wine in Westville on the Woodbridge line. If you want to go out to the burbs, there is New England Bev Co in Orange on the Post Rd near Trader Joes. Lots of good brew pubs and breweries too – Thomas Hooker is up near Hartford, City Steam in Downtown Hartford, and SBC’s (Milford, Branford) is just OK.

  5. OK you want to know the best place to buy beer, not the best beer distributor, because here in Connecticut that means beer wholesaler, of which there are several. But you’re still the new guy so I’ll cut you some slack. You are asking about what used to be called Package Stores.

Amity Wine probably has the best selection, but beware stale beer. Sometimes I wonder how long some of those obscure European bottles have been on the shelves. And sometimes their specials taste old.

Liquor World on Whalley has good prices and a decent selection. So does the guy on the corner of Racebrook and Route 1 in Orange.

Don’t forget to check out New England Brewing in Woodbridge where you can get your growler filled at the source.

  6. Not sure if they sell Iron City, but New England Beverage was my favorite when I live in New Haven. It’s on the Boston Post Road next the Trader Joe’s in Milford

  7. My first choice is New England Bev. Co. on the Post Rd. They have a GREAT selection of singles so you can mix and match a ton of craft beers from around the US. They have tastings there occasionally as well. If you want something they can usually get it.

Amity has an awesome selection too, but far less domestic craft singles. I get cases from their usually but keep an eye out for the shopping cart full of singles in the beer aisle… some great diamonds in the rough there.

I am always looking for a variety so I can add some new labels to my collection so my goals may be a bit different then yours.
